RE: help on colorado campgrounds

Are you looking for NFS campgrounds or commercial?
There are several NFS campgrounds that will meet part of your needs, and there are a couple of commercial ones as well. Naturally the closer you are to town the harder it will be to find what you want.
PS... I don't consider Chama to be in the local area. :B

RE: Front Door Lock Failures - Locked Inside 5er

When we had a lock failure, and as far as I'm concerned it will happen, we replaced the lock with a household deadbolt. Upon inspecting our failed lock it seems that it was made of cheap potmetal and subject to stress cracks and thus failure.

RE: back of pickup bouncing while backing

So far no one has mentioned or asked what kind of surface the tires are on. My truck will bounce in reverse as the tires make and break traction . This doesn't happen on concrete or asphalt just on the dirt/rock roads found in alleys or campgrounds, especially if it is a bit of an uphill backing maneuver.
My solution is to put the truck into 4 Lo and let all the tires move the rig rather than depending on just the rear tires doing all the work.

RE: boondocking at glacier NP

Some of the land is public, some private, most is reservation. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are on reservation land you are under Indian Law and subject to their court system.

RE: Trip to Colorado

69 is a long and slow drive...But interesting as you are between the Wet Mountains and the interstate. :B
We took it just because we had time and wanted a different way to come back from Walsenberg.

RE: 550 from Durango to Silverton

The state of CO didn't put that monument on Red Mountain Pass because they didn't have anything else better to do with their signs. No... they put the monument there to honor all the snowplow drivers that have lost their lives keeping Red Mountain Pass open during the winter.

RE: Domain Name Stolen!

How does one get a domain name stolen anyway, a bad register? :?Sometimes you don't really own the domain name, depending on whom you purchased it through. Thus when the name expires someone else can snag it and "hold it for ransom".

RE: Trip to Colorado

69 is a very nice, slow paced, scenic route but I wouldn't recommend it if you are wanting to make any time. It's off the beaten path, two lane country road.
A better route would be to go west from Walsenburg to Alamosa and then take 17 north over Poncha Pass, an easy pass to Salida and then on north to Buenie.
While going all the way to Pueblo might sound and look like a better route, I personally wouldn't use it. Hwy 50 from Canon City to Cotopaxi follows the Arkansas river, twisting and turning with some very blind curves.

RE: Girls wanting to go to Denver, CO

Well, here's a link to campgrounds in the Denver area:
Colorado Campgrounds
You might have to scroll down to the D section to find Denver, but I found several campgrounds with pools (I know kids may not be to keen on lake swimming.)
One, down in Castle Rock, isn't that far from the DRT station so you could ride the light rail line to downtown and Elitch's.

RE: anyone else getting a scooter for local transport?

The subject matter is the discussion of scooters, mopeds, not whether any of them are street legal.
Actually I believe the subject matter was scooters in lieu of driving the truck to work/ on errands, which would necessitate them being street legal.I understand what you are saying, but I am saying that in Colorado the Whizzer is street legal. Now other states may have laws that might exclude them from being street legal but we aren't necessarily talking about those states, we're talking about states in general. Each person needs to research their particular states laws and decide what will work best for them.
I notice in all of this that everybody seems fixated on actual scooters. I've considered similar but was looking more along the lines of a 250cc dual purpose motorcycle. At 280 pounds a Kawasaki KLX 250S wouldn't weigh any much more than a lot of these scoots, is street legal, still gets 60mpg, and can run at speeds making it much safer than some scoots which will be hard pressed to do over 50mph. Just something else to think about.Part of this depends on the streets that you have to drive on. If the main speed limits are 35 or less then a larger motorcycle may not make sense. If you are on higher speed limited streets or highways then you want/need the power to keep up with the flow of traffic.
I've often thought that a mid-sized motorcycle might be the best for me, as you have said. Anything that gets better fuel mileage than what I drive is a good solution for cutting my fuel costs but then again when I weight the pros and cons I'm able to drive my mini-van almost 6 weeks on a tank of gas simply because my trips are less than a mile or two. :B

RE: Very Interesting......future trucks

My question is why put a 12 speed tranny in? :h
The only reason I can come up with is to move the shift points of the lower gears because once you hit OD or double OD you are still in the power band and yet able to move the load. A triple OD or quad OD will move you out of that band and the tranny will start hunting.

RE: anyone else getting a scooter for local transport?

You might consider a Whizzer
These are not legal for the road (even if you are crazy and take it out there), they are not allowed on the sidewalks as they do have a motor. So the only place to ride is off road or in a campground that would allow them. You cannot get them insured either. I have a 50cc that I ride in campgounds and can ride on the back streets as it does have a Plate from the state. I would not take in anyplace that has a speed limit greater than 35mph. THe reason for the 50cc is no motorcyle license is required for 50cc and under.Maybe they are not legal in your state but they are street legal in Colorado. Also, as for riding on the sidewalk, don't ride your bicycle on the sidewalk in Colorado Springs as that is against the law.
The subject matter is the discussion of scooters, mopeds, not whether any of them are street legal.

RE: Denver

There are many DRT station parking lots for taking the light rail, but I doubt that they can handle an RV.
Drop the trailer in Estes Park and drive back to Denver. IMHO

RE: My First Pull

{snip}Maybe theres just an issue of a lot of drivers out there that shouldn't be pulling things around, or have undersized TV's, that need devices to save their butts..... Maybe there is a bunch of people with way more experience than you and they are offering their opinions just as you asked for. :)

RE: Road Service Response Time

In a former life :B I worked for a tow company.
You have to keep in mind that the drivers aren't sitting around waitng for your phone call. They are busy towing for the city, moving a wrecked car from a lot to the collision repair shop, changing someone else's flat, delivering gas, or helping with a wreck/recovery.
Our shop had 6 trucks and for the most part only one of the smaller ones was at the shop at any given time. What response time estimates given to you by the Road Service company is just a wild guess to placate you. They have no idea what kind of workload the shop actually has or how quickly the shop can respond and handle your case. It also might be that there is a greater emergency than what you are. Case in point, we tossed a belt on our mini-van and when we called for service we were told it would be at least an hour. Three hours later the truck finally showed up and his story was that Raton Pass had been jammed up with a bunch of cars and trucks stuck in the snow (and we had heard this also on the radio) and it took 5 tow trucks 3 hours to clean up the mess. I was just thankful that he found time to get away from that job to get to us and get us to a repair shop.
